Something that popped into my head while enjoying your wonderful post.

The struggle that modern critics have when it comes to Beowulf is that they have only seen the Fruit vine of Beowulf in the winter time of History. they never saw its majesty and Magic. During its spring time when the stories flowered in the minds of its creator. nor its Harvest Time when it had influenced the thousands of scattered tribes amongst the Saxon people of old.

From bonfire to bonfire Beowulf infiltrated the imaginations of men. As a kind of masterful skeleton key to unlock the dark hearts of my ancestors in order to make room for the glories of the Gospel.

I may me off base in that thought. But I felt like in ought to be shared.

It seems the original quote about Beowulf could even be applied to Tolkien's work. He took stones he found at hand (one being Beowulf), and he built a tower that has defined a genre, especially because people don't know what he was doing.
